“In response to the exceeding greatness of the gift of God, we dedicate ourselves to loving Him with all our heart, mind, soul and strength, and consecrate our lives to his service.”
(From the Covenant of The Servants of the Word)
In the Gospel, a young man seeks out Jesus to learn from him the path to eternal life. The Lord’s reply was an invitation – to make a personal response, to go, sell all and follow Him. The Servants of the Word began a similar call. More than 30 years ago a group of young men, moved by the Holy Spirit, came together with a common vision for a life of service to God; liven in simplicity and in community. Many others have joined us, and today our collective response to God’s call is our common life in The Servants of the Word.
Brothers join the Servants of the Word because of a carefully considered conviction that they are called to be one of Gods servants. Our lives are not our own, they belong to God. As a response to what God has done for us in Christ, we have consecrated our lives to him. We wish to see His name glorified, to be messengers of the salvation he offers to everyone.
To devote our energies more fully to this mission, we have chosen to live unmarried, in community, with simplicity of possessions and personal subordination as our pattern of living. It’s a way of life that has helped Christians through many centuries live in dedication to Christ.
